Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or imploding.

Matteo's Unforeseen Presence

One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the nature of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
