Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of characters who will separate from the main group to undertake their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

This explains, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, intertwining the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Fighters, Strategists, and Seekers.

What Defines the Combat Party

Per the DM, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a traditionally charged battle-oriented narrative style where non-violent answers are scarce.

Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might appear mismatched, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the team has a clear idea where to proceed after a intense initial meeting with the enemy group.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The traitor then settled his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each member has a specific drive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, desires retribution.
  • The adventurer knows the northern area and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute the target and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • However, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could help the party reach locations they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character vowed a eternal obligation to The savior for his salvation and will now go with him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that rule the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The healer defied House Halovar and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is marked for death by House Halovar.

This results in them no alternative but to head to Timmony in search of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the rest of the cast members to form the Questers and Strategists tables.

Fans can look forward to finding out which players will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on October 24.
