Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
